2 Timothy 1:8-18

Unashamed and Bold

We are called to be unashamed of the gospel by resting in the power of God. With boldness we should stand up for our biblical doctrine. Instead of appeasing the world, we should stand apart, standing strong on our foundation—Christ. Our present sufferings thankfully aren’t unique. There are many Christians throughout the world and all of time who are going through similar—and much worse—trials as we are. Paul of all people understood the meaning of suffering for Christ. As Paul is in prison awaiting his death sentence, he writes to Timothy and the church of Ephesus calling them to be bold in their faith. Paul knew that he was suffering for the message of God’s good news. It is ever so important to know what you believe in, but infinitely more important to know who you believe in. Paul believed in Jesus Christ. Spurgeon once said that if you know Christ you will know yourself. Paul knew the character of Christ and because of this he was able to give his life to Christ. Once Paul realized that he had nothing to offer, he could become bold through God. The gospel calls us to holiness, demonstrates God’s grace, tells of the destruction of death, and is the message of life and immortality. We need to hold fast to the truths of the gospel.

Chosen and Planned

We are not powerful enough to “discover” God. God calls us and we respond. He called us for his purpose. He chose the least of us. He wanted to choose us. He planned for us before time began. It is through his incomprehensible mercy and grace that we have been given the opportunity to respond to his calling. Jesus’ death on the cross has further revealed the purpose of God. Jesus triumphs over death and takes away its threat. Death to the believer is like a mere second on an infinite timeline. Death graduates believers to glory.

“When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” -1 Cor. 15:54-57 ESV
